THE Salvation Army has collected scores of toys and tins of food from The Press, which will help it ensure some of York’s most vulnerable people enjoy a happy Christmas.

Readers have donated toys, books, games, teddies, dolls and food which will be used by the church as it fills food parcels for people in need and collects toys for children from struggling families.

It wants to ensure all children wake up on Christmas Day to presents and then have food to eat, said Major Andrew Dunkinson.

He said the Salvation Army helped more than 720 children last year and may assist even more this year.

The appeal, which also benefits a York refuge for women and children affected by domestic abuse or sexual violence, continues until Friday. Gifts should be handed in to The Press’s reception in Walmgate during normal office hours, other than between 3pm and 4pm.
