YOUNG adults with life-limiting conditions hope to challenge perceptions when they stage a film festival at the University of York.

The group, who are supported by Martin House Hospice, have made short films for a project involving Martin House and St Leonard's Hospice looking at how young people can transition from children’s hospice care to adult hospice services.

Tuesday's event is from 5pm to 7pm at the Alcuin Block.

There will also be a Q&A session with the group, along with drinks and mince pies.

Dr Bill Hulme, St Leonard’s Hospice director, said: “We are excited to be supporting the young adults. It shows the culmination of many hours work with the Martin House team.”

Dr Jan Aldridge, consultant clinical psychologist at Martin House, said: “My experience working with the young people has been extremely rewarding. I love the name they have chosen for the event, it captures their humour and courage. They and Martin House are delighted to work in partnership with St Leonard’s, thinking together about the different and particular needs of young adults.”

The project, which is funded by national charity Together for Short Lives, is responding to the growing number of people living into young adulthood with life-limiting conditions, and how they can access suitable care and support as they grow older.

Dr Bill Hulme, medical director at St Leonard’s Hospice, said: “We are really excited to be supporting the young adults’ event, which is the culmination of many hours’ work with the Martin House team. I hope this will enhance the public’s understanding of living with a life-limiting condition and we see their sense of humour shining through”

Martin House cares for children and young people with life-limiting conditions across West, North and East Yorkshire, as well as supporting their families. It has a specialist unit, Whitby Lodge, at its hospice which caters for teenagers and young adults.
