A MAN has been sent to prison for assaulting two women - including his own mother.

Samuel Peter Myers, 20, whose address was given as Hull Prison where he is currently in custody, but who is formerly of Pickering, appeared at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court.

He was charged with three counts of assault by beating on two separate occasions. Myers had changed his plea from not guilty to guilty to all charges on the day.

Prosecuting, Emily Jenkins said that the first instance happened on September 20 at an address in Scarborough, where Myers was accused of beating a woman who was his then-partner.

Ms Jenkins said: “Police received a call from a concerned member of the public. Screams were coming from the address.

The defendant was seen punching the woman in the property - she had her hands raised and the witness could hear her begging the defendant to stop.”

The second incident, which happened in Pickering on October 18, involved Myers hitting his mother in the mouth and pulling her hair while she tried to protect his partner from another attack.

“The defendant’s mother was trying to protect his partner from an attack on her,” Ms Jenkins said.

“He was strangling her round her throat and she suffered bruising to her arms.”

Ms Jenkins said that when interviewed by police, Myers initially denied the charges and cited self-defence.

For Myers, David Camidge said his client had a history of mental health issues and that his father had died while he was in custody.

“It’s a fairly grim set of circumstances,” he said.

Imposing the sentence, magistrate Wendy Holroyd gave credit for the guilty plea but said: “These were very serious assaults where injuries were caused.

“For these two offences we are sending you to prison for five months, concurrent for each matter.”

In addition to the custodial sentence, Myers was ordered to pay compensation of £250 to his former partner and £200 to his mother.

He was also given a restraining order banning him from approaching his former partner on his release, or entering Market Place and Birdgate in Pickering, with the exception of one visit per day to the Pickering pharmacy.
