A MAN who raped a child and a sleeping woman in separate incidents has been given a 23-year extended prison sentence.

York Crown Court heard that Daniel Lee Bushby’s repeated sexual abuse of the primary school-age girl left her suicidal and with disturbed behaviour.

In a victim personal statement, her mother said: “I am scared I would go up to her room and find her dead.”

Jeremy Hill-Baker, prosecuting, said Bushby had sexually abused the girl on several occasions.

Mr Hill-Baker said the adult victim had gone to sleep in a friend’s house and woke to find Bushby raping her. Bushby had been on bail at the time for abusing the child. In her victim personal statement, she said she had had to leave the area where she had lived and now suffers from anxiety and depression.

The girl and woman are not related.

Bushby, 23, of Nelson Street, Scarborough, pleaded guilty to raping the child three times, seven charges of causing her to engage in sexual activity and two of engaging in sexual activity in her presence and raping the woman once.

Judge Andrew Stubbs QC said he was a dangerous man who was likely to commit more serious sexual crimes and gave him an extended sentence of 17 years custody followed by six years’ extended prison licence. He also made him subject to a sexual harm prevention order curbing his behaviour on release and a restraining order, both for life.

Bushby will also be on the sex offenders’ register for life. He had no previous convictions.

For him, Graham Parkin quoted a medical report saying that Bushby was willing to change and could be rehabilitated under a lengthy prison treatment programme. He said Bushby had suffered from a bad upbringing from a mother who had been emotionally detached and had not provided food for her children.

He had twice been taken into care.
