AN 82-year-old man passed out at the wheel of his 4x4 and hit a bus stop in York.

North Yorkshire Police, paramedics and a North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service crew were rushed to the scene in Poppleton Road, Acomb, at about 11.45am on Thursday, after the crash.

A spokesman for the fire service said the crash was "minor", and the driver had suffered "a medical blackout".

He said: "The driver was walking wounded and not trapped in the car. Crews carried out an inspection of the car only."

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the man was driving a grey Jeep Grand Cherokee when he "appeared to have a medical episode" at the wheel.

The spokeswoman said the vehicle had caused some damage to the bus stop, but luckily, nobody was waiting at the bus stop at the time and nobody else was injured in the crash.

The 82-year-old driver was taken to York Hospital by paramedics, and although the road was not closed, the damaged vehicle was in a position which partially blocked the road.

Police said the vehicle was recovered and the road was fully cleared at about 12.50pm, and City of York Council had been made aware of the damage to the bus stop.
