Glad to read (York drivers could face stiff fines for parking on pavements, Press online, December 3) that the city council are in favour of making parking on the pavement illegal in York.
Pavement parking is more than just an “inconvenience” - it’s a major barrier for people with visual or mobility impairments, wheelchair users, and families with pushchairs.
If people cannot make their way along a pavement because a vehicle is obstructing it, they will have to go out into the road to be able to get past - which obviously puts them at risk of being hit by other traffic.
Speaking from experience, this is scary and dangerous. A survey by Guide Dogs showed that 97 per cent of blind or partially sighted people encounter problems with street obstructions, and 90 per cent of those had experienced trouble with a pavement parked vehicle. Come on drivers, stop being so inconsiderate!
