COLUMNIST Megi Rychlikova raised an interesting question (The Press, November 30) of whether pedestrians should wear high visibility clothing at night, for their own safety.
Motor vehicle drivers are relatively secure in their cocoons, with so-called safety features such as air bags and crumple zones.
Perhaps these encourage some motorists to drive in a manner that is inappropriate for night time visibility, and with less regard for the consequence of poor driving standards upon other road users.
Should society be placing the onus for safety upon the potential victim? Or should motor vehicles be stripped of their 'safety features'?
Should they be manufactured from the same material as greenhouses and have a big spike fitted to the steering wheel? If so, they might be driven with far more courtesy and consideration.
I do wear a high visibility jacket for night time pedalling. It has a big word POLITE on the back, with the smaller word 'cyclist' beneath it.
Amazing how many car drivers misread it, slow down and give me a safe, wide berth.
