Quick thinking Osbaldwick residents saved themselves from a nightmare in their bedroom when it caught fire in the early hours of today.
The blaze gutted the room and caused major smoke damage to the upper storey of their home.
But they called 999, got buckets of water and managed to put the fire out themselves before firefighters from York and Acomb got to the scene.
In saving themselves, they had breathed in so much smoke that the firefighters turned first aiders and gave them oxygen.
Paramedics checked them over and declared they didn't need hospital treatment.
The drama began at 4.30am in Osbaldwick.
