A POPULAR wedding venue in York has been named the best in Yorkshire.

The Hospitium, in Museum Gardens, scooped the Yorkshire Wedding Venue of the Year accolade at The English Wedding Awards 2018.

Members of the York Venues team, which manages events and weddings at all of the sites run by York Museums Trust, including the Hospitium, joined 200 wedding professionals at the ceremony on Wednesday at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel.

The Hospitium was one of a number of prestigious venues in the county shortlisted for the award after being nominated by a couple who got married there.

Claire Knott, wedding and events manager for the charity York Museums Trust, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to win this award. The team prides ourselves on making sure every couple who get married with us have the day they dreamed of, so we are delighted that one such couple took the time and effort to put us forward for this award. To then win and be named the Wedding Venue of the Year for Yorkshire is a fantastic accolade that we are very proud of.”

The 14th century Hospitium is a two-storey listed building overlooked by the ruins of the Grade 1 listed St. Mary’s Abbey. It is licenced to hold weddings and civil ceremonies.

For those looking for their wedding venue, there will be an Open Day at the Hospitium on January 27, from 11am to 3pm. The venue will be set up and dressed so couples can begin to imagine how it may look on their special day and the friendly weddings team will be on hand to show visitors around.

The event is free and there is no need to book to visit. However, people can reserve a show round by phoning 01904 687671 or emailing york.venues@ymt.org.uk. All profits raised through weddings at the Hospitium are used to care for the collections and buildings looked after by York Museums Trust.
