THE SALVATION Army in York says is set to ensure that 80 guests - who would otherwise be on their own at Christmas - enjoy a great day of festive fun, friendship, good food and games, along with carol singing and music.

Major Andrew Dunkinson said guests and helpers have been coming for years to the regular event, and they have become a kind of ‘Christmas family’ for each other.

“It’s wonderful to see how everyone cares for each other and makes sure any newcomers enjoy themselves and feel included,” he said.

However, he stressed that the event would not be possible without the generosity of local firms and well-wishers.

“A regular donor is M&K Quality Butchers, who kindly donate all the turkeys, pigs in blankets and stuffing balls for Christmas lunch,” he said.

“York Sports Club, in Shipton Road, have generously donated the use of their club facilities free of charge and a brilliant team of helpers make it a special day for anyone who would otherwise be on their own at Christmas.

“Festive donated goods from firms and individuals in York provide a wonderful bag of Christmas goodies for each guest to take home with them at the end of the day.”

Matthew Kneafsey, of M & K, said, “Having been associated with The Salvation Army Christmas lunch for many years, it gives us great pleasure, as a family, knowing that all the guests will be having such wonderful festive fayre.”

Majior Dunkinson said the free event included morning refreshments, and a full lunch, and transport could be arranged for anyone needing it. Anyone who would like to be a guest should phone 01904 630470, write to to The Salvation Army, c/o 1 Lundy Close, York, YO30 5GQ or go to www.YorkSA.org.uk by December 9. “We already have sufficient helpers,” he added.
