Review, Reef, Fibbers, York, November 16
IF you are looking for a band to deliver an uplifting set filled with crowd-pleasing hits, look no further, as Reef rolled into town to play Fibbers last Friday.
After a brilliant supporting set by Broken Witt Rebels, the York crowd was buzzing and it was time for the headliners. Opening with Naked, Reef got into full stride in no time, and this song and the other hits from the 1990s were the ones that still got the audience going the most on the night.
All these tracks from their heyday were still sounding fresh and involving. A pared-down version of I've Got Something To Say was lush; a real tribute to Gary Stringer's vocals and the band's professionalism that were further highlighted by a superb rendition of gospel classic How I Got Over.
It's not always easy for a band to deliver with the passing of time and people's expectations, but Revelation, Reef's first album since the turn of the century, had its title track aired, which went down a storm.
The crowd clearly wanted more. The band might not have had the budget for Sheryl Crow on the night but My Sweet Love was still brilliantly done in the encore. It had been a hot and sweaty gig as Reef and the room sang along together for Stay With Me at the end. A fine and fond farewell to the show.
