ANOTHER stunning stained glass window from York’s Barley Studio has been unveiled in London - this time by the Queen.
The window, created by Helen Whittaker at the studio in Dunnington, has gone up at the RAF Club in Piccadilly as part of the centenary celebrations of both the club and the RAF.
Helen was no stranger to the club, having previously made a staircase window to celebrate 90 years of the RAF in 2008.
The new window captures the graphic nature of World War II posters, with block colours and bold lines, created using a variety of glass techniques illuminated by both transmitted and reflected light.
They were presented by Britain’s first female fast jet pilot, Jo Salter, and the Queen, who served in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War, was said to have been intrigued by both the archive images and their contemporary setting.
Another window by Helen, based on a design by artist David Hockney, was unveiled at Westminster Abbey in September to celebrate the Queen’s reign.
