COMEDIAN Eddie Izzard is set to be awarded an honorary degree by York St John University in a ceremony at York Minster next week.

The university said the honour was for his outstanding achievements as a comedian, actor, writer, fundraiser and political activist.

"Eddie is a Hollywood star and one of the most successful comedians of his generation," said a spokeswoman.

" A master of languages, he is renowned for making audiences laugh in English, French, German and Spanish. He has performed in sold out shows around the world, as well as breaking box office records in Britain and the United States. He is also regularly in the headlines for his charity work, particularly his epic series of marathons which raised £2.6 million for Sport Relief.

"In recent years, Eddie is almost as well known for his political activism. He identifies as transgender and has previously vowed to become one of the first trans people elected to Parliament.

"York St John is committed to being a trans-inclusive institution and is extremely proud to be among the top 100 employers in the UK according to LGBT rights charity Stonewall.

"At the graduation award ceremony, which takes place in the stunning setting of York Minster, Eddie will be awarded a Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) alongside fellow honorary graduand and former York St John University Vice Chancellor Professor Dianne Willcocks.

"Hundreds of students will join them as they are awarded degrees by York St John University Vice Chancellor Professor Karen Stanton and Chancellor Archbishop Dr John Sentamu.

Professor Karen Stanton, the university's Vice Chancellor, said:“Each year, York St John awards honorary degrees to a number of respected, influential and high-achieving individuals who inspire and motivate our students and graduates to achieve their potential. "We are delighted to be recognising Eddie’s achievements as a performer, his promotion of modern languages and his ability to promote tolerance by the award of an honorary degree.”
