A NEW art installation will go on show at York Minster to highlight domestic abuse against women.

The Independent Domestic Abuse Service (IDAS) has commissioned the In Her Shoes piece, which features 100 pairs of shoes, representing the 100 or more women killed annually in the UK by their current or former partners.

The exhibition will go on display in the Minster’s South Piazza on Tuesday, November 27, just after the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25), as part of a 16-day campaign to raise awareness of gender-based violence.

Visual artist Mim Robson and York poet Hannah Davies have created the installation, which includes words from domestic abuse and sexual violence survivors.

Mim said: “We have aimed to create something which gives a space for these voices to be heard, seen and understood by the public. My hope is that the visual impact of this installation, paired with Hannah’s poetry, will help to raise awareness and understanding of domestic abuse, and how IDAS can support those who are or have experienced it.”

Hannah, artistic director of Common Ground Theatre, said she had a personal reason to support the project.

“IDAS are an important charity doing fantastic work. They helped me in out in a very difficult time, and the work they do is invaluable for many. I am proud to be supporting this fantastic charity and using my creative voice to help bring their important work to the public in an inspiring and impactful way.”

Rose Merritt, from IDAS, said: “In Her Shoes is about raising awareness of the scale of domestic abuse by sharing the sad reality that 100 women die at the hand of their partner or ex-partner every year, a figure that is not decreasing."

“We hope that seeing In Her Shoes will motivate people to find out more about how they can be part of a solution to end domestic violence.”
