A CASH machine at a convenience store in York has been attacked and damaged overnight.

Officers were called to the Co-op shop on Beckfield Lane, Acomb, at around 5.10am.

The ATM at the store was cordoned off by police this morning.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Officers in York are investigating after a cash machine in Acomb was damaged.

“Inquires and forensic tests are currently taking place and it is not currently believed that any money was stolen.”

A spokeswoman for the force had previously confirmed that there had been an “attack” on the ATM.

A member of staff at the store told The Press: “I got in the shop this morning and I could smell a strong smell of burned plastic.

“Fire alarms were going off.

“The dispenser part of the ATM has been opened with something.

“The smell of burned plastic is still strong.”

Local resident Téba Diatta said you could see through the machine where it dispenses cash.

At around 9.55am, fire crews were called to reports of a smell of smoke at the shop.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "On investigation it is believed this was caused by an electrical fault in a cash dispenser."
