A NOTORIOUS prisoner danced a jig of delight as a jury acquitted him of attempting to seriously harm a prison governor.

Charles Salvador, formerly known as Charles Bronson, said: "British justice, best in the world. Thank you."

He had defended himself throughout the four-day trial at Leeds Crown Court.

The 65-year-old who has spent periods in Full Sutton Prison near York was charged following an incident at HMP Wakefield on January 25.

He was not in the courtroom for the end of the trial, but appeared via a video link to HMP Frankland, County Durham, where he is currently serving a life sentence.

He pursed his lips together after the verdict was delivered by the jury foreman and then did a celebratory jig as he waved his arms around.

Judge Tom Bayliss QC said to the defendant: "You seem pleased with that, Mr Salvador. You are discharged from this."

Before the link to the court was cut, Bronson smiled and replied: "British justice, best in the world. Thank you."

His supporters in the public gallery welcomed the jury's decision and laughed.

At the start of the trial, Salvador was in the secure dock in Courtroom 13 of Leeds Crown Court surrounded by dock officers.
