VIBRANT paintings by North York Moors artist Sue Slack will go on show at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, from November 26.
Sue, who lives in Lockton, is inspired by the moorland landscapes that surround her, working predominantly in acrylic, a paint that suits her technique of painting in layers of colour to give her artwork a glow redolent of stained glass windows.
"The colours are the colours I see in the landscape, accentuated and re-adjusted as the painting progresses," she says. "It’s important to me that the place I’m painting is recognised: my work often appeals to walkers or cyclists who know the landscape well. It’s the shape of the land that first attracts me, followed by the light and shadows playing over the land."
Sue is a member of Pickering Running Club and this burgeoning enthusiasm for fell running has taken her to new places, both mentally and physically, becoming a major influence on her work. "I feel my commitment to working outdoors reflects a deeper understanding and connection to the land I paint," she says.
Sue is part of the Fylingdales Group of artists and chairs the Lockton Artists’ Open Studios. Her work is in private collections both home and abroad and she takes on commissions regularly.
Her paintings can be seen in the SJT gallery from November 26 to January 7; gallery opening hours are 10am to 6pm, Mondays to Saturdays, except during show times. Entry is free.
