WE thought when we set Press Camera Club members the task of taking photos in black and white for this month’s photography competition that it might prove a bit of a challenge.

Not at all. It turns out black and white (and the many shades of grey in between) are the most expressive of ‘colours’’, adding depth, clarity and purity of line.

Judging by the quality of the entries we have been getting, being forced to think “black and white” also seems to have encouraged camera club photographers to think even more than usual about the composition of their pictures.

Just look at Annette Varley’s “I’m ready and waiting”. It isn’t just the eagerness in the pup’s tensed body that makes this such a great photo - it’s also the artfully arranged gloves tucked into the wellies.

Jo Turnbull’s Holgate bridge and Sue Walker’s black and white landscape are equally well thought-out so as to take advantage of the emphasis on light and shade that black and white gives to a photograph. Even the Yorkshire landscape looks good in black and white, a Di Holt’s study shows.

Great photos all. But keep them coming - there’s still half a month to go...
