How disappointed I was to read the article ‘Germany Beck Street names are criticised’ (The Press, November 13). I wonder how many years the councillors slating the names chosen have lived in Fulford.

My grandfather Frank Thornton lived in a railway carriage in Fordlands Lane. In 1926 my father Alan Thornton was born in that carriage. My grandfather went on to build his family one of the first brick houses in Fordlands Lane. They later moved to 63 Main Street where grandad ran the local plumbing business.

My father’s brother Frank Thornton junior, also a plumber bought 77 Main Street in the early Sixties and developed the garage into a fish and chip shop which remains open to this day.

My father began working as a young lad for his grandfather Charles William Thornton in his Market Garden on land opposite the Pavilion Hotel long before the garage was there.

My father and mother set up two businesses in the village, a launderette and, at number 22, a frozen food shop.

Typically the councillors, once presented with someone else’s ideas for naming the roads, reverted to a negative response. Before stating that the names chosen have no relevance to Fulford’s history they need to do their homework. The Thornton family not only lived in the village they also provided a variety of services to the people of Fulford for well over 100 years. Maybe the other names chosen have a similar history and deserve to be recognised in the Germany Beck development.

Thank you Persimmon.

Street names should reflect site of battle

WITH reference to the article ‘Germany Beck street names criticised’: in 1066, before the Battle of Hastings and Stamford Bridge, there was the Battle of Fulford. The men involved in that battle were Tostig, Harald Hardrada, Godwinson, local earls called Edwin and Morca and a banner called Landwaster.

What about Hardrada Crescent, Godwinson Drive, Tostig Way and Morca Close - and if there is going to be an area with shops and a car park maybe that could be called Landwaster?

Maybe when eventually families move in, they will wonder who was Tostig and why Landwaster and become interested in the history of the area.

‘Muddy Meadows’ would get my vote

I WOULD like to suggest several names for developers Persimmon to peruse bearing in mind that the Germany Beck houses are to be built near a flood plain.

They are: Muddy Meadows, Puddle Place, Rainwater Road, Wellington Way and Tsunami Street.
