A POLICE drug sniffer dog visited a string of pubs as part of a night of enforcement, action and reassurance for members of the public in Selby.

Police officers worked with district council enforcement and licensing officers in a series of visits to town centre pubs on Saturday night.

The action evening was organised by the Safer Selby Community Safety Partnership and included a drug sniffer dog and handler who visited six pubs in the centre of town.

North Yorkshire Police deployed its mobile police office as part of its community engagement plan.

Enforcement and trading standards checks were also carried out in stores and off licences. In addition, enforcement officers spoke with taxi drivers and visually inspected vehicles in use.

Chief inspector Rachel Wood, deputy commander of York and Selby, said: “North Yorkshire Police is committed to working alongside Selby District Council and the Safer Selby Community Safety Partnership to tackle issues within the night time economy.

“Together, we are sending out a strong and clear message that we will not tolerate drugs being brought into our licensed premises, and we will take every action we can to disrupt and deter such offences.

“We want people to come into the town to enjoy themselves but we want them to be safe. We will therefore continue to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and ensure that licensed premises are operating as they should be.”
