LEST WE FORGET: A moment of sombre reflection at York Minster as a congregation gather for a special service of thanksgiving and commemoration to mark 100 years since the signing of the Armistice at the end of the First World War.
Photographer Frank Dwyer was at the cathedral at 9.30am on Sunday - November 11 - to capture this photograph.
The order of service included a new hymn - Ally Barrett’s ‘Hope for the world’s despair’ - written especially for the centenary commemoration, and sung for the first time on Sunday at York Minster and St Paul’s Cathedral.
The congregation included serving members of the armed forces and their families, together with members of the public. The Archbishop of York gave a short sermon, before ‘prayers of intercession’ were read on behalf of all those - civilian and military - who have suffered or died as a result of conflicts around the world.
Many in the congregation then made their way to the Memorial Gardens for a minute’s silence at 11am and a traditional ceremony of Remembrance.
