READING Christian Vassie’s letter (Brexiteers are seeking isolation, November 7) I was saddened by the inward-looking naivety of the Remain supporters.

Churchill was undoubtedly a charismatic leader who helped to preserve democracy and foster a “spirit of coalition” but the world has now changed immeasurably.

By focusing across the Channel at a group of countries whose economic and trading futures are looking increasingly parlous we would be ignoring the burgeoning opportunities presented by 200 other countries around the world where the future really lies.

So it is the likes of Mr Vassie who are seeking to be isolated and protectionist by retaining primitive borders and it is the Leave supporters who are attempting to expand our horizons and future economic prosperity while retaining the strong trading and defence links with our European neighbours.

We can only adopt a modern global perspective fit for the future if we break out of the straight-jacket of primitive groupings often based on territory, religion or greed. It will take time to achieve and require patience but it is the only way forward.
