A VILLAGE near York is planning a special event to commemorate the Armistice which ended the First World War.

Upper and Nether Poppleton Parish Councils are joining together to hold events on the Village Green at Upper Poppleton on both Sunday morning and evening.

A Remembrance Service on the Green at 10.45am will honour Poppleton enlisted soldiers who gave their lives in both world wars and the more recent conflict in Afghanistan, followed by the placing of poppy wreaths and a bugler sounding the Last Post and Reveille.

From 6.30pm, a special village choir, assembled by Bob Jones with accompanying music by Margaret Evans ,will lead community singing of well known soldiers' songs of 100 years ago, such as ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’and ‘Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag’.

At 7 pm the Rolls of Honour will be read and two minutes silence observed, with the bugler blowing the Last Post and Reveille, after which a beacon will be lit and church bells rung, followed by further community singing and refreshments.
