THE town crier of Helmsley – whose great grandfather died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme - has commissioned a special bell to proclaim peace in the town on Sunday.

David Hinde’s ‘Battles Over - One Hundred Years Of Remembrance Bell’ will be used to mark his proclamation of the ‘Cry For Peace’ at 7.05pm at All Saints Church, followed by the church bells ringing out.

More than 160 town criers worldwide will simultaneously be doing the same thing to mark the centenary of the Armistice.

David said his great grandfather Frank Elswood, who lost his life on July 1, 1916, was an iron moulder.

“How fitting, given that he was involved in metals casting, that this hand made bell has his name on the reverse, with the battle date,” he said.

On the front of the bell are the words: ‘Battles Over – A Nations Tribute – 11 November 2018 – One Hundred Years Of Remembrance.’
