REPAIRS to two major bridges in the Selby area have progressed to the halfway mark and are running to schedule.

Repairs to Cawood swing bridge began on October 8, and the bridge is unable to swing for river traffic until the project is complete. The road has been closed since October 22, but is hoped to reopen by November 18.

Work on the safety and structure of Haddlesey Bridge, on the A19 south-west of Selby, started on October 1, will see 24 steel bearings that support and enable the bridge to expand and contract replaced. The work is expected to take 12 weeks.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie said: "The principal contractor at Cawood has endeavoured to finish the work within the shortest timeframe and the number one priority is the safety of pedestrians and site personnel.

"With all the complex work going on under the bridge it cannot be opened up to traffic until it is complete. The contractors would like to pass on that they appreciate the community’s continued support while this work takes place."
