COMMUNITIES across York, North and East Yorkshire have been busy preparing to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.
Many projects have been months in the making, involving scores of people of all ages.
Among the eye-catching and poignant displays are the cascades of knitted, crocheted and felt poppies which have been appearing on church railings, war memorials and special art installations ahead of the anniversary, most notably at Selby Abbey and All Saints Church in York.
A number of war memorials have been restored in time for the 100th anniversary, schools have been holding special assemblies and museums have been including fresh displays and activities to help highlight the effect the war had on people.
