A SPORTS club which is home to more than 300 football players has unveiled plans for a new pavilion and car park.

Wigginton Sports and Playing Field Association has submitted a planning application for their site off Mill Lane.

The pavilion would feature changing rooms, a kitchen and a community space which the applicants say could be used for activities such as pilates, children’s parties and Weight Watchers meetings.

And a planning statement says the number of parking spaces at the site would more than double, from 102 to 212, and disabled bays and cycle parking would also be created.

A planning statement says the spaces would be created to ease parking problems on Mill Lane following complaints made to the parish council.

The site is home to Wigginton Grasshoppers FC and the planning application says: “The club is home to over 300 players from the age of five to 18 years, both boys and girls, as well as the under 19’s, seniors reserves and first team and a recently formed walking football team for all age groups.

“The club now have over 20 teams competing in various York and district leagues. Wigginton Grasshoppers FC has been at the heart of the local community since 1982.

“The football club is committed to providing children and adults a safe, enjoyable and nurturing environment to develop their footballing education.”

The club raised concerns that if their facilities are not upgraded, they may struggle to host cup finals and festivals: “With many rival clubs having modern changing facilities the club has concerns that it will fall behind in their ability to continue to host such events.”

Plans include new showers and toilets, a meeting hall, store rooms, a pantry and kitchen.

The club currently uses portable buildings at the site, which would be removed if the pavilion plans get the go-ahead.
