ONE lucky resident will get the chance to fill Bishopthorpe Road with Christmas cheer this year by entering a prize draw to turn on the Christmas lights.

Bishopthorpe Road Traders Association are running the Lights on Lottery competition first the time ever this year.

People can purchase lottery tickets for £1 each that will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to switch on the street lights at the Christmas street party next Friday.

Bishopthorpe Road Acting Chairman, Pete Kilbane, said: “It is something that will be talked about for years to come.

“This year we have organised a street party on the road from 6 until 9pm to help celebrate the start of the Christmas season.

“Last year we had a low turnout, but this year the road will be cordoned off and we are expecting crowds of about 1,000 people to come down and celebrate with us.”

To be in with in a chance you need to buy a ticket, available from all Bishopthorpe Road shops, cafes and pubs.

Those taking part include The Winning Post, Angel on the Green, Fruitique, Costcutter, Evolve, Pextons and Robinsons Cafe.

A selection of entertainment will also be on display. including singing from Knavesmire School Children.

The York RI Golden Rail Band will be performing a selection of Christmas songs as well as the York Rock Choir.

Children will able to watch some festival animations and sit on Santa Claus lap.

Mr Kilbane said: “The traders will be out in force and there will be a Christmas street market featuring handmade arts and crafts, music and games for all. There are still a few stalls available that can be hired by contacting Fiona Tolladay at The Winning Post on info@winningpostyork.co.uk”
