I WAS pleased to read that there will be a new plastic free shop in Bishopthorpe Road opening soon (The Press, October 23).

We should also celebrate another York shop, Alligator in Fishergate, which has been helping to reduce plastic waste since the 1970s.

Alligator is a unique York institution where you can buy loose and unpackaged organic vegetables and fruit which is often from local growers. You can weigh out all manner of foods kept in sacks and jars, from rice and oats to obscure spices and herbs.

You can also choose from a huge range of fair trade and organic chocolate, and enjoy a shop where many of the customers are on first name terms with the friendly staff.

So here’s to carrying on the great York tradition of plastic-free and low-plastic shopping. Saving the world one bar of chocolate or organic potato at a time!
