COUNCIL bosses welcomed the news that Channel 4 has chosen to relocate its national headquarters to Leeds - saying York will “reap huge benefits” from the move.

The national broadcaster announced plans to move to Leeds City Region, which York is part of, and it is expected to bring 1,285 jobs and £1.2 billion to the area over the next 10 years. Channel 4 said the move is part of its plans to ensure it better represents all of the UK, both on and off-screen.

City of York Council leader Cllr Ian Gillies said York’s digital infrastructure and talent was recognised as a “key part” of the bid to bring Channel 4 to Yorkshire.

He said: “I’m delighted. It’s fantastic news. I’m confident that our residents, businesses and universities will reap huge benefits from this success.

“Having a national broadcaster in our region will help make York an even more attractive location for national and international investment. It’s a great boost for York and the region.”

He said the move could mean greater opportunities for the city’s universities and creative and production industries to work with the broadcaster.

York Central MP Rachael Maskell also welcomed the news. She said: “I congratulate the Leeds City Region partners for securing the Channel 4 relocation from London.

“This provides an excellent opportunity for creating new jobs in York, and I will continue to work with partners to ensure that York maximises benefit from the move.”

City of York Council had previously said it wanted the HQ to be in York but Cllr Gillies said it had later emerged that the city did not have suitable office accommodation available.

However he said York had played a key part in the bid to bring the broadcaster to the region.

Cllr Andrew Waller, deputy council leader, said: “It is excellent to learn that Channel 4 have chosen the Leeds City Region to set up their new national HQ. There is no doubt that York provides a unique offer within the Leeds City Region, as we continue to maintain a successful local economy, as well as being home to a highly skilled workforce and some of the world’s leading universities.

“With the addition of Channel 4 to the region, York will continue to go from strength to strength.”
