GEORDIE Joe McElderry will star in the world premiere of Michael Gyngell's 1980s' musical, Club Tropicana, on tour at the Grand Opera House, York, from March 18 to 23 next year.

McElderry will be joined by Neil McDermott, Kate Robbins, Emily Tierney and Amelle Berrabah for a summer adventure of love in the sun with a soundtrack of pop classics performed live on stage.

The new show takes a fun-packed trip back in time to the electric 1980s when hair was big, shoulders were padded, girls (and boys) just wanted to have fun and mobile phones were shaped like bricks and weighed a ton.

Welcome to the vibrant Club Tropicana Hotel – the Eighties' answer to Love Island – where the drinks are free and the whole family is invited to join "the ultimate holiday musical".

When a budding bride and groom suffer cold feet, they each decide to jet off to sunnier climes and feel the heat, but little do they know they have checked into the same hotel.The sizzling summer season at the Club Tropicana sees drinks flowing and tans glowing. Will the young lovers decide to go through with the wedding? Will the hotel inspectors close the resort, or will the staff save the day?

All will be revealed to a soundtrack of ABC; Cyndi Lauper; Haircut 100; Fine Young Cannibals; Frankie Goes To Hollywood; a-ha; Culture Club; Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton; Bucks Fizz and Depeche Mode.

The cast will be headed by McElderry, 2009 winner of The X Factor winner and star of Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Grand Opera House in 2015; McDermott, who played Ryan Malloy in EastEnders and starred in Eugenius!, The Wind In The Willows and Shrek; Robbins, from Spitting Image and Dinnerladies;Tierney, from Eugenius!, Wicked and The Wizard of Oz, and former Sugababes singer Amelle Berrabah, making her musical theatre debut.
