CARS came to a stand still yesterday as a steam train was spotted squeezing its way under the bridge at Leeman Road.

Residents got out of their cars to take pictures of the Beattie Well Tank departing from York Railway Museum at about 3pm.

The British Steam Locomotive, first built in 1863, is heading down to Bristol to join the Avon Valley Railway end of season gala on November 10 to help commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Spokesman for the museum, Simon Baylis, said: “ Our operations team took several precautionary measures to make sure the train would fit under the bridge.

“It took about about 10 minutes to slowly manoeuvre the train through the tunnel

“It was quite a squeeze and t’s always worrying that it might get damaged but thankfully everything was okay.”

Mr Baylis said that the Beatie Tank will be back on display at the museum from November 19.
