Great potential in bridge upgrade work
Andy Knowles suggested (Letters, October 26) that the money being spent on York’s Scarborough Bridge upgrade would be better spent on pothole repairs.
The funding for the bridge scheme is a tripartite one, with City of York Council, West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the York/NorthYorkshire/East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership all contributing.
Much of this cash is ringfenced for capital work rather than maintenance, so cannot be spent on pothole repair.
The bridge upgrade has the potential to link both with York Central, and an upgraded cycle route through the Bootham Park Hospital site.
The prospect of encouraging more short distance local travel by bike, rather than by car, must be music to the ears of those who still need to use motor vehicles.
