YORK and North Yorkshire are set to enjoy some pleasant sunshine today after yesterday's snowy cold snap.

Temperatures are set to rise to 8 or 9C in York, with northerly winds continuing but gentler than yesterday, when wintry showers led to snow sticking at higher locations such as Sutton Bank near Thirsk and Chopgate near Helmsley.

The Met Office said yesterday was one of the coldest October days in a decade but temperatures will gradually return to normal in the coming week.

“Temperatures will recover quite slowly but it is not likely to be as wintry," said a spokesman.
