A LOCAL charity's festive pop-up shop has returned to York, thanks to the generosity of a local landlord.

York Against Cancer, which sells seasonal gifts and cards, is back in the former Jones Bootmaker site on Pavement.

Last year's shop sold £31,000 worth of items, the best result for the charity in recent years.

General manager, Julie Russell, said: "We never thought we'd be able to have the shop again this year, so it was a lovely surprise when Barry Crux & Co, acting on behalf of York Conservation Trust (YCT), offered it to us again.

"They have been amazing and we can't thank them enough."

The shop is housed in Sir Thomas Herbert's house, a famous York landmark managed by YCT.

YCT spokesman, Ian Daniells, indicated that, as the upper offices have now been vacated, the Trust would be undertaking a programme of refurbishment works at the site once the charity shop closes.

Sir Thomas Herbert, a parliamentarian and friend of King Charles 1, was born in York in 1606.

All profits from sales at the York Against Cancer shop go towards helping local people living with cancer.
