LORD Mayor of York, Cllr Keith Orrell, has attended a presentation ceremony to mark the end of the 2018 Dragon Boat Challenge.

In the past 16 years, challenge organiser Rotary Club of York has raised a total of £1 million for charity. This year, the club raised £85,000 for good causes, its best year yet.

At the Mansion House presentation, two charities each received cheques for £10,000 - York Mind, an independent provider of mental health services, and Citizens Advice York, which offers impartial advice on a range of subjects.

The Mayor also presented trophy winner SWIFT, from RAF Linton-on-Ouse, 72 Squadron, who clocked up the fastest time with the trophy and a cheque for its chosen charity.

This year’s Dragon Boat Challenge was over-subscribed for the 36 available places, with teams from businesses, charities and the military competing on a sweltering day in July.

The traditional afternoon start time was brought forward to 9am so contestants and spectators could watch the World Cup Final.

The annual race takes place between Scarborough and Lendal Bridges.
