A BINGE drinker whose violent outburst left two people injured and forced his partner to flee her home with her baby has been given a community order.

Kathryn Reeve, prosecuting, said Lewis Bennett, 19, threw kitchen furniture and chairs around and attacked his partner’s brother.

“There was no reasoning with him,” said Ms Reeve. “The defendant was screaming and swearing at him and flying into a rage.”

The partner fled with her baby to a nearby flat whose occupant tried to break up the fight but ended up injured herself.

Chris McGrogan, for Bennett, said: “He feels that the level of his drinking now is such as to cause him concern and that he needs some sort of help to try and deal with it. He doesn’t want this sort of situation to arise again.”

Bennett, of Springhill Court, Tadcaster, pleaded guilty to two assaults, plus assaulting a special police officer by spitting on him.

York magistrates gave him a 12-month community order with 40 days of rehabilitative activities to tackle his drinking and other issues and 150 hours’ unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to his partner’s brother.

Ms Reeve said Bennett had been drinking all day. His drunken behaviour was so bad he was refused service when he tried to buy a bottle of rum at an off-licence on his way home.

Back in his flat, his partner's brother suggested the group watch television.

But despite his attempts to prevent problems, Bennett then exploded into violence. The brother suffered a black eye and other injuries to his face, arms and chests. The neighbour suffered bruises and other minor injuries.

When police came to arrest Bennett, he spat at a special police officer.
