A MAN was knocked unconscious and left with facial injuries after an attack in York city centre.

North Yorkshire Police said that they are appealing for information after a man was seriously assaulted in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident happened when Nick Dray, 22, from Bramble Dean, Woodthorpe was walking from Club Salvation towards the station to get a taxi at about 4am when he was attacked by a group of men outside the Grand Hotel.

He said: "I was walking up past the hotel when I was shouted at by a group of lads.

"We had a little drunken argument and then I was hit to the floor and stamped on repeatedly.

"I don't remember much. I was knocked unconscious but I remember a girl cradling my head whilst the ambulance were on route."

Mr Dray suffered a broken cheek, seven stitches and said he will be off work for at least a week whilst the swelling in his eye reduces.

His brother, Jamie Dray, said:: "We were obviously in shock. Beating someone to that extent especially when they are drunk and by themselves, is just reckless, disgusting, uncalled for behaviour."

A Police spokesman said: "The victim was taken by ambulance to York Hospital with serious injuries including a fractured cheekbone and eye socket.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including searching CCTV in the area. It is believed a number of men were present at the time of the assault who then left the scene.

"Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and speak to the Force Control Room. Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111."
