CHILDREN who were injured when their school bus tyre exploded have been released from hospital.

The F21 service was on its way from Dunnington to Fulford School in York at about 8.30am on Tuesday when a tyre blew out in Heslington Lane.

Three boys and a girl were injured when the exploding tyre caused debris to ‘blow up’ into the passenger area. The girl suffered facial injuries and one of the boys suffered leg injuries. Both were taken to hospital, while the other youngsters were allowed to recuperate at home.

Lorna Savage, head of Fulford School, said on Friday that all four had now returned to school, and their injuries were not severe.

She said: “All the children are recovering very well, and no-one was kept in hospital. Both were released the same day, and are back at school already.

“We are very relieved that all the children are recovering well and it’s brilliant to have them back at school."

Mrs Savage said the injuries “were mainly scratches and grazes and a burn”, from the substance that came through the bus floor when the tyre exploded.

She said: “There are no lasting effects that we have been told about and information we have had from parents is there are no lasting effects.

“We’re really delighted with it and most of them were able to go off on school trips on Thursday which was great news.”

Bus operator Pullman and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency are carrying out investigations into what happened, while co-operating with Fulford School and City of York Council.
