A GROUP of local crafters have created riches from rags with their rag rug creations.

The group, 10 York Crafters, who have met weekly since 1988, are showing off their work from the past two years at an exhibition of work at the Chapel in York Cemetery.

In addition to the colourful rag rugs, there will be a huge range of other handmade crafts on display, including spinning, weaving, crochet work, paper and cloth prints, knitting, basketry and felting.

Hand-made knick-knacks, cards and wooden spoons decorated with rag rug-making material and pyrography - decorations burnt into the wood - will also be available for those already thinking about Christmas presents.

Rag rugs are generally made using surplus scraps of fabric on a backing, which is stretched onto a frame. The fabric is looped with a special tool to create the rugs.

The exhibition, open all weekend from 10am until 4pm, is free.
