A MAN was killed after he was hit by at least four vehicles while standing in the middle of the M4, an inquest has heard.

Samet Kaylialp, who was born in Turkey, but came to Gwent around two-and-a-half years ago to work for his cousin's takeaway business, was hit by a car and a number of other vehicles on the westbound carriageway of the motorway just after the Brynglas Tunnels just after 5am on Thursday, March 8.

An inquest into his death heard the 20-year-old, who had been living with his cousin's family in Newport, had first been hit by a Ford Focus, which knocked him to the ground, and then a number of other, larger vehicles.

A post-mortem found he died as a result of having suffered multiple injuries.

Senior coroner for Gwent Wendy James said: "There is no evidence to explain why he was on the M4 that morning.

"Even if Samet thought that section of the M4 was closed it does not explain why he was where he was."

She added: "There is no evidence before me to indicate Samet was stood on the M4 that morning with the intended to end his life."

She recorded a conclusion that he died as the result of a road traffic collision.
