A LEADING York private school has applied for planning permission to build a new dance and drama studio as part of plans for a multi-million pound performing arts hub.

The first phase of the proposals include an extension to the school building which will feature space for recitals, exams, lectures and art exhibitions as well as drama and dance classes.

Planning documents say the building will also be used for weddings, parties and other events “benefitting the local community”.

A statement from the school says “there is a huge demand in York for upgraded sports and performing arts facilities” from clubs and state schools.

It goes on: “The proposal will create an attractive performing arts space that will enable the school to continue to compete in the independent school sector by providing facilities of the highest possible standards. This multimillion investment will create a 21st century performing arts venue.

“The Mount has a strong tradition of performance and the proposal will allow this to continue for future generations of Mount pupils.”

Former pupils include Dame Judi Dench.

Later phases of the development will include the refurbishment of the performance hall and a new atrium built to link the music block with the new extension.

The ambitious investment plans were unveiled after it was revealed that the school was experiencing financial difficulties and had lost more than a quarter of a million pounds last year. Principal Adrienne Richmond told The Press last month that she is confident the school has a “carefully thought through strategic plan that allows The Mount a secure and flourishing future at the heart of the York community”.
