PUPILS have done North Yorkshire proud with their GCSE results.

The county has ranked highest in Yorkshire and the Humber for progress made by students and remains well above both the national and regional average.

Figures from the Department for Education show that pupils performed exceptionally well in the new GCSEs, graded 9 to 1, with 48 per cent gaining strong passes (grades 9-5) for English language, literature and maths.

County councillor, Patrick Mulligan, said: "This is an outstanding set of results for North Yorkshire and they are a testament to the hard work and commitment of our young people and their teachers.

"It reflects the very strong teaching in North Yorkshire schools and the partnership between schools, the county council, teaching school alliances and the diocese, as well as the strong partnership with parents and families.

"These results reflect North Yorkshire's determination that all students can meet their full potential and that our schools continue to offer excellence and a broad, balanced and appropriate curriculum."
