Students are back, dark nights are here, and again the roads are filled with cycling students without any form of illumination, oblivious to their invisibility and vulnerability. If stopped, they say ‘Sorry’ as though it wasn’t their life that was at risk.
The police are doing nothing, citing lack of resources, although there were five officers at the reopening of the New Earswick Folk Hall for as long as I was there.
PR must be more important than saving lives. The southern end of University Road has large trees and deep shadows: a couple of officers doing their job and handing out £50 fines for a few evenings is all that’s needed - word would get round the student community and someone’s life will get saved.
