During a monthly meeting of Acomb’s Parish Council, Councillor W Pearson had drawn the committee’s attention to the appalling state of some of Acomb’s footpaths, especially the east side of Carr Lane, where contractors’ lorries had been constantly going over the paths. Due to their poor state, the villagers of Acomb were now having to walk on the road “for comfort.” However, according to the Streets and Buildings committee it was good news for Boroughbridge Road, after two new Telephone Kiosks had been issued. And Downing Street had been busy after a good deal of activity in Geneva. Adjourning the Disarmament Conference for ten days, Mr Henderson stated that it was a period of waiting and reflecting. There were however other suggestions in the air, but so far, in terms of Disarmament Conference, the attitude of Germany withdrawing was a good time to re-assess the agreement.

A new soft sculptured look for men’s clothing, the first menswear collection by designer Sighsten Rerrgard was on display in London. The collection with its almost unisex feel of leisure wear and evening wear would be the envy of any female, thanks to the abundance of floppy hats and gold chains around the neck or hip line. Wally Hargreaves and Son, cycle dealers, had opened its new ski centre at their shop in Walmgate, York. With all four members of the family having skied in Switzerland and Austria for the past seven years, staff working in the new department were all very able to give advice on equipment and on the sport itself. And although she was already married Mrs Truddy Hodge, of Boroughbridge Road, York, had won the title of Miss York Young Conservative at Queen’s Hotel, Micklegate.

York’s latest TV star, Eddie Vee, had won a new fan club following a sensational National Lottery performance. The city’s leading Elvis impersonator who had performed live on the National Lottery Dreamworld programme had taken the country by storm with his version of Blue Suede Shoes. Mr Vee had even been mobbed whilst collecting his children from Woodthorpe School. And the splendour of York’s De Grey Rooms had been brought back to life as the venue hosted the first in a series of arts events. Redundant since the decline of the dance hall, the venue was now providing a much-needed space for struggling performers.
