Reading Mike Laycock’s column ‘Why is music so awful now’ (The Press, October 12), there are times when, going into some of the shops in town, you hear some awful music and singers, especially females. I would love to go and turn it off.

I suppose it does depend on how old you are as, when we have visited my sister in California, we still hear Elvis, Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers, Patsy Cline and other singers being played, which to my ears were far better.

What century are you living in, Bill?

What century is Bill Heppell living in? ‘France is our traditional enemy’, ‘Germany was our opponent’, ‘the Scots always went to France’ (History seems to be affecting Brexit deal, Letters, October 12). Surely there are already enough problems in the world - climate change, poverty, war, plastic pollution - without digging up ancient history.

I for one am grateful to be living in a Europe that, in forming the EU, put its old differences aside and has now been at peace for 70 years.

A chance to think about your funeral

I wonder how many of us think ahead when it comes to wills and funerals? My father wrote down everything he wanted at his funeral, including the organist! It was such a help when the time came.

Most of us put this off. If you’d like a safe place to chat things through, come to St Sampson’s Centre for the over 60s on Monday, October 22, from 2pm to 3pm .

Over tea and cake we can share ideas. See you there. By the way , you don’t have to be over 60…
