CONSULTATION on a £500,000 plan to improve an historic York street has been extended.

City of York Council wants more feedback from businesses and residents on how Fossgate can be changed to help attract more visitors to the area.

Earlier this year, the council changed the direction of traffic along Fossgate, significantly reducing the amount of traffic, and new plans include relaying the road surface and repaving the Yorkstone paths, creating better junctions at both ends of Fossgate, widening the narrow footpaths at Pavement, introducing new street furniture like bike stands, benches and possibly trees, and speed tables and crossing points.

City of York Council Leader Ian Gillies said: "Fossgate is a real success story with its variety of independent shops, restaurants and cafes which are very popular with both residents and tourists.

"We want to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to give us their views on the proposals which is why we have extended the consultation period."

The deadline is now midnight on Sunday, October 21, and submissions can be made online at york.gov.uk/fossgate or in the foyer at West Offices.
