A COLOURFUL event lit up the city streets last night as walkers took part in a new fundraising challenge to support Cancer Research.

About 1,400 kind-hearted residents helped raise more than £60,000 for charity by tackling the 10K route.

Emily Wilson, 26, who lost her mum Amanda Wilson, 56, to cancer, sounded the starter horn at the event.

She told the crowds: "It does still break my heart to think my mum will never see me get married or have children. That makes me want to do more positive things and be involved with Cancer Research.

"We need to make sure that we keep research going and help find cures."

The event began at 7.30pm at Rowntree Park, with participants wearing colourful outfits and neon glow sticks walking past landmarks including Clifford's Tower, Shambles and York Minster before reaching the finish line at York Barbican.
