Charity ball in memory of jockey Laura Barry, 25

The event, to be held at York Racecourse on October 27, is in memory of Laura Barry, who was a former apprentice to Malton trainer Richard Fahey.

Laura moved from Limerick in Ireland to Malton in 2010, to pursue a career in the saddle. Later she moved to Northallerton.

But she started suffering from pain in her left leg in 2016, and was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer that attacks the nerve ducts of the spine and nervous system.

She died aged 25 in July - just two days before she was due to be married.

The event, which is being organised by Bertie Hayton and Gemma Tutty, is aiming to raise a large amount of money for the three charities who helped Laura throughout her illness - Macmillan Cancer Support, the Injured Jockeys Fund and Sarcoma UK.

Gemma said: “The support from these three charities was nothing short of incredible.

“Until you sadly find yourself in these situations, you don’t truly appreciate the lengths these charities go to for the individuals in need of their help.

“The Injured Jockeys Fund, in particular, was pivotal in the care that Laura received for the entirety of her illness, including flying

Laura home via private air ambulance, just days before her untimely passing.

“We hope to raise as much money as we can for the these three amazing charities, let’s give something back and have a great night in doing so.”

An auction of prizes on the night of the ball will include the chance to be a racehorse owner for the season with Richard Fahey, a box for up to 20 guests at Limerick Racecourse for 2019, two days racing at Bangor and Chester racecourses with accommodation, a private flight to Newmarket racecourse from York for four people for a day’s racing and dinner before flying back, wine tasting for six people, a Michael Owen-signed football shirt and more.
