IT was with huge sadness that we learned of the impending retirement of the wonderful Dr John Semtanu, Archbishop of York.

His work for God and great humility have been a fine example to both those who work inside the church and indeed the many hundreds of thousands in the UK and the wider world who work outside the church.

He links up and tolerates people of all religious persuasions in the world.

As a trained Anglican reader, now retired, I have always found him very approachable and without doubt he cares very well for his flock.

Something not known by many - but very much appreciated - are the beautiful Christmas and Easter cards signed personally by the Archbishop which he sends to all ordained and lay ministers and readers who serve the people in the northern parishes.

You will be sadly missed, Archbishop John.
